Do you never have enough time to finish what you've started? Are you not able to make it to appointments on time? This is probably due to the fact that you can't manage your time well. If you want to maximize your time, start your day by taking 30 minutes to plan your entire day. This time you take to plan out your day will save you a lot of time in the long run. By having your day planned out, you will have a schedule to follow and will avoid wasting time with unnecessary tasks.


When you can't manage your time well, consider how you spend your time. Spend your time wisely. As an example, take the time to review emails or voicemail during a specific time of day, and don't worry about them when you need to take care of other tasks. Looking at them at other times of the day will steal time away from a time slot delegated to another task.


If you have a task that you have been dreading, break it up into several sittings. If you work on the project for ten or fifteen minutes at a time, you can get through it much easier. You will not have to dwell on the stress and pain that you are going through while doing it.


Close your door so you are free to focus. An open door signals accessibility, and others will think it's okay to disturb you. There is less chance of interruptions if you close your door. It is easier to finish tasks on time when people know you are focused.

Decline any tasks that are really nonessential. Take care of those things that are urgent or important. Most of your time will be spent on matters that are both urgent and important. Anything that falls outside of these two categories does not deserve much of your time if you want to get things done.


Knowing when to ask for help is a big part of effective time management. Whenever you have trouble completing a particular task, ask yourself if there's somebody else who knows how to get the job done. Due to this, it is often helpful to assign a deadline to any new tasks that does not yet have one. You can be more productive with practically any task when you commit to a deadline.


Make a plan. It can be easier to stay on task and use your time wisely when you know exactly what you will be doing. Your schedule should be realistic, though, or it won't work. For example, if you are working on a big report, schedule each individual task as well as you can so you know just how long it will take.
